The Kind of Bargain I Am After
I am not looking for a midpoint where everyone receives a fraction of what they wanted and nobody will defend the result. I want bargains in which competing constituencies receive recognizable wins at the same time.
Operational border control can coexist with legal status for established residents. Fiscal discipline can coexist with a tax code that treats income consistently. Broad ownership can coexist with a basic floor that protects people from poverty.
The point is not that every detail is easy or every voter will agree. The point is to build settlements that can last because each side receives something real, and neither side receives a promise that can be withdrawn later.
